Ο Ι   Β Α Π Τ Ι Σ Μ Ε Ν Ο Ι   Ε Ι Ν Α Ι   Χ Α Ρ Ι Σ Μ Α Τ Ο Υ Χ Ο Ι

«μή ἀμέλει τοῦ ἐν σοί χαρίσματος, ὅ ἐδόθη σοι διά προφητείας μετά ἐπιθέσεως τῶν χειρῶν τοῦ πρεσβυτερίου.»                            (Α΄ Τιμ. δ΄ 14)

                        Ὁ θεῖος Παῦλος, ἀγαπητοί ἀδελφοί, συνήθιζε νά ἀποστέλλει γράμματα, στίς κατά τόπους ἐκκλησιαστικές κοινότητες τίς ὁποῖες ἵδρυσε, γιά νά τίς στηρίξει στόν ἀγώνα τους, νά τούς ἀπαντήσει στά ἐρωτήματά τους καί νά τούς διορθώσει ὡς πρός τά ἐλαττώματά τους.  Συνήθως στό πρῶτο μέρος ἐξέθετε τή διδασκαλία τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, δηλαδή τούς ἔλεγε ποία εἶναι ἡ ὀρθή πίστη καί στό δεύτερο μέρος τούς προσέφερε πρακτικές συμβουλές γιά τή ζωή τους.

                        Τρεῖς ἐπιστολές, ἀπό τό σύνολο τῶν δεκατεσσάρων, λέγονται ποιμαντικές, γιατί ἀπευθύνονται πρός Ἐπισκόπους, οἱ δύο πρός τόν Τιμόθεο, τόν Ἐπίσκοπο Ἐφέσου καί ἡ μία πρός τόν Τῖτο, τόν Ἐπίσκοπο τῆς Κρήτης.  Τό σημερινό ἀνάγνωσμα προέρχεται ἀπό τήν πρώτη ἐπιστολή πρός τόν Ἀπόστολο Τιμόθεο. 

                        Μέσα σέ τοῦτο τό ἀνάγνωσμα κάμνει λόγο πρός τόν Τιμόθεο γιά τό χάρισμα τῆς Ἱερωσύνης, τό ὁποῖο τοῦ δόθηκε ἀπό τήν Ἐκκλησία μέ τήν ἐπίθεση, δηλαδή τήν τοποθέτηση τῶν χεριῶν τοῦ Παύλου καί τῶν ἄλλων, πάνω στό κεφάλι τοῦ Τιμοθέου.  Μέ ἄλλα λόγια ὁμιλεῖ ὁ Παῦλος γιά τή χειροτονία τοῦ Τιμοθέου στό Ἐπισκοπικό ἀξίωμα καί τήν ὑψηλή τιμή, τήν ὁποία αὐτό τοῦ προσέφερε.

                        Ὁ θεῖος Παῦλος λέγει πρός τόν Τιμόθεο καί σ’ ἐμᾶς, ὅτι ἐκεῖνος προτάθηκε στόν Ἐπισκοπικό βαθμό κατόπιν ἀποκαλύψεως ἀπό τό Ἅγιο Πνεῦμα.  Συμβουλεύει δέ τόν Τιμόθεο νά μήν παραμελεῖ τό Ἐπισκοπικό ἀξίωμα, τή θεία χάρη ἡ ὁποία τόν ἀνύψωσε στό ἀνώτατο αὐτό ἀξίωμα καί τοῦ προσέφερε τήν ὑψηλή καί εἰδική τιμή, τήν Ἐπισκοπική.  Αὐτή τοῦ παραχωρήθηκε δωρεάν, χωρίς ὁ ἴδιος νά τό ἐπιζητήσει καί οὔτε ἐπειδή τό ἄξιζε ἤ ἐπειδή ἦταν σέ θέση νά τό ἐξασφαλίσει μέ ἀγορά σέ κάποια τιμή ἤ μέ ὁποιονδήποτε ἄλλο τρόπο.

                        Ἡ ἐπιμέλεια τήν ὁποία ὁ Παῦλος ἐπιζητεῖ ἀπό τό μαθητή του καί τώρα Ἐπίσκοπο Ἐφέσου Τιμόθεο εἶναι ἡ ὑγιής καί ἀδιάκοπη διδασκαλία τοῦ ποιμνίου του, ἡ ἐμμονή του στήν ὀρθή πίστη, ἡ ἐξάσκηση τῆς προστασίας τοῦ ποιμνίου ἐνώπιον τῶν ποικίλων αἱρέσεων καί πειρασμῶν καί ἡ καλλιέργεια τῆς ἀρετῆς τῆς φιλανθρωπίας.  Ὅπως ὁ ποιμένας τῶν ἀλόγων προβάτων παραμένει συνεχῶς στό πόδι γιά νά ἀνταποκριθεῖ στίς ἀνάγκες προστασίας, συντηρήσεως, διατροφῆς καί θεραπείας τοῦ κοπαδιοῦ του, ἔτσι καί ὁ ποιμένας τῶν λογικῶν προβάτων ἀπαιτεῖται νά ἐπαγρυπνεῖ γιά τίς πνευματικές ἀνάγκες τοῦ ἐμπιστευθέντος σ’ αὐτόν λαοῦ.

                        Ὅποιοι ὅμως μελετήσετε τοῦτο τό κήρυγμα θά πεῖτε, αὐτό ἀναφέρεται πρός τούς Ἐπισκόπους.  Σ’ ἐμᾶς θά ρωτήσετε τί ἔχει νά πεῖ;  Ὅλοι οἱ βαπτισμένοι συμμετέχουμε στό βασίλειο ἱεράτευμα, στή γενική δηλαδή Ἱερωσύνη τοῦ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, εἴμεθα χαρισματοῦχοι.  Αὐτά λοιπόν τά χαρίσματα ἡ Γραφή μᾶς προτρέπει καί μᾶς συμβουλεύει νά μήν τά ἀμελοῦμε ἀλλά νά τά καλλιεργοῦμε, νά τά ἐπαυξάνουμε καί νά τά πολλαπλασιάζουμε πρός δόξα Θεοῦ καί τή δική μας σωτηρία.  Ἀμήν!

ΧΡΙΣΜΑ: Τό Σάββατο, 14^η Ἰανουαρίου 2012, ὁ Θεοφιλέστατος Ἐπίσκοπος Τροπαίου κ. Ἀθανάσιος δέχθηκε, ὡς νέο μέλος τῆς Ὀρθοδόξου Ἑλληνικῆς Ἐκκλησίας, μέ τό μυστήριο τοῦ Χρίσματος, τή Γεωργία Στυλιανοῦ, τῆς ὁποίας  ἀνάδοχος ἦταν ἡ Μαρία Στυλιανοῦ.  Εὐχόμεθα στή νεοφώτιστη νά ζήσει καί τή συγχαίρουμε, ὅπως ἐπίσης τήν οἰκογένεια καί τήν ἀνάδοχό της.

ΜΕ ΕΠΙΤΥΧΙΑ Η ΦΙΛΑΝΘΡΩΠΙΚΗ ΕΚΔΗΛΩΣΗ:  Τήν Τρίτη βράδυ, 17^η Ἰανουαρίου 2012, ἡ Κοινότητα Ἀποστόλου Βαρνάβα μέ ἐπί κεφαλῆς τή Βοηθητική Ἀδελφότητα Κυριῶν καί Δεσποινίδων Η ΠΑΝΤΑΝΑΣΣΑ διοργάνωσε φιλανθρωπική ἐκδήλωση μέ σκοπό νά ἐνισχύσει τήν οἰκογένεια τοῦ κ. Γιάννη Γεωργίου, ἡ ὁποία εὑρίσκεται σέ περιστάσεις οἰκονομικές ἕνεκα τῆς ἀσθενείας τοῦ προστάτου αὐτῆς.  Ἡ προσπάθεια ὑπῆρξε πολύ ἐπιτυχής, γιατί εὐρύ φάσμα τῆς ὁμογένειας τήν ἀγκάλιασε καί τή συνέδραμε.  Οἱ παρόντες ξεπέρασαν τούς διακοσίους σέ ἀριθμό καί ἀποτελοῦσε μεγάλη ἱκανοποίηση καί χαρά συνάμα νά παρακολουθεῖ κάποιος τήν ἀνταπόκριση ἀπό μέρους ὅλων γιά νά συμπαρασταθοῦν στό συνάνθρωπό μας.

                   Τήν ἐκδήλωση τίμησαν μέ τήν παρουσία τους ὁ Σεβασμιώτατος Ποιμενάρχης ἡμῶν Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Θυατείρων καί Μ. Βρετανίας κ.κ. Γρηγόριος, οἱ Θεοφιλέστατοι Ἐπίσκοποι Κυανέων κ. Χρυσόστομος καί Τροπαίου κ. Ἀθανάσιος, ὁ Πρόεδρος τῶν Ἑλληνορθοδόξων κοινοτήτων κ. Μάριος Μηναΐδης, πρόεδροι καί μέλη πλησιόχωρων κοινοτήτων καί πλῆθος λαοῦ τῆς περιοχῆς.  Τήν ὁμήγυρη τῶν συνδαιτυμόνων καλωσόρισε ἡ κα Ἀνδρούλα Χριστάκη ἀπό μέρους τοῦ προεδρείου, ὁ Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος καί οἱ Ἐπίσκοποι ἀπηύθυναν λίγα διδακτικά λόγια καί εὐχαριστίες καί ὁ κ. Γεωργίου μίλησε μέ χαρακτηριστικό σθένος ὑπομονῆς καί καρτερίας ὥστε συνεκίνησε ὅλους.

                   Συγχαίρουμε θερμά καί εὐχαριστοῦμε ἰδιαίτερα ὅλους καί ὅλες, οἱ ὁποῖοι ἀνταποκρίθησαν γενναιόδωρα καί συνέδραμαν παντοιότροπα αὐτήν τήν ὡραία καί φιλάνθρωπη προσπάθεια.  Νά ἔχετε τήν εὐλογία τοῦ Θεοῦ.  Συγκεντρώθηκε ποσό πάνω ἀπό £6,000.00.  Κάποιοι ἴσως βοήθησαν ἀπ’ εὐθείας.  Ὅλοι εἶστε ἀξιέπαινοι καί ἀξιομίμητοι.

Κ Α Ρ Π Ο Σ   Τ Ο Υ   Ψ Ε Υ Δ Ο Υ Σ   Ο   Θ Α Ν Α Τ Ο Σ

«μή ψεύδεσθε εἰς ἀλλήλους» (Κολ. γ΄ 9)

                        Τό ψέμα, ἀγαπητοί ἀδελφοί, ἀποτελεῖ ἕνα ἕλκος μέσα στήν ἀνθρώπινη ψυχή.  Πολλοί ἄνθρωποι ἔχουν συνηθίσει νά λέγουν τόσα πολλά ψέματα καί μέ μεγάλη εὐκολία, ὥστε αὐτό ἀποβαίνει μιά μάστιγα στή ζωή τῆς κοινωνίας.  Ὅταν οἱ ἄνθρωποι χαρακτηρίσουν κάποιον ὅτι μέσα του βασιλεύει αὐτό τό κακό, τότε οὔτε καί ὅταν λέγει τήν ἀλήθεια γίνεται πιστευτός, σέ τέτοιο βαθμό μάλιστα, ὥστε τό πράγμα δυνατόν κάποτε νά ἀποβεῖ μοιραῖο γιά τόν ἴδιο.

                        Νά βεβαιώσουμε ὅτι ὁ πρῶτος ψεύτης εἶναι «ὁ ὄφις ὁ μέγας ὁ ἀρχαῖος, ὁ καλούμενος Διάβολος καί ὁ Σατανᾶς, ὁ πλανῶν τήν οἰκουμένην ὅλην» (Ἀποκ. ιβ΄ 9), ὁ ὁποῖος μέ μισό ψέμα καί μισή ἀλήθεια ἐξαπάτησε τήν Εὔα, τήν πρώτη γυναίκα καί ἔτσι τό ἀνθρώπινο γένος ἔχασε τόν παράδεισο, ἀπομακρύνθηκε ἀπό τόν Ἀληθινό Θεό καί ἔζησε στήν πλάνη γιά πάρα πολλούς αἰῶνες. 

                        Ἡ παρακοή τοῦ ἀνθρώπου στό θεῖο θέλημα ἔφερε τόν πνευματικό θάνατο, δηλαδή τό χωρισμό τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀπό τό Θεό καί ὁ Θεός ἐπέτρεψε τό φυσικό θάνατο ἀπό εὐσπλαχνία πρός τόν ἄνθρωπο, «ἵνα μή τό κακόν ἀθάνατον γένηται»  κατά τό Μέγα Βασίλειο. 

                        Στό βιβλίο τῶν Ψαλμῶν ὁ προφήτης Δαυίδ λέγει: «πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ψεύτης».  (Ψ115.2 (116.2).  Τοῦτο μποροῦμε νά ποῦμε ὅτι ἀντιπαραβάλλεται πρός τό Θεό, ὁ ὁποῖος εἶναι ἡ Ἀλήθεια καί ἡ Ζωή, καί ὑπονοεῖ ὅτι ὁ ἄνθρωπος συχνά φανερώνεται νά μήν εἶναι ἀγωγός καί προαγωγός τῆς ἀλήθειας.  Ἀντίθετα πρός τό Θεό, πολλές φορές ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἀθετεῖ αὐτά τά ὁποῖα ὑποστηρίζει καί προβάλλει.

                        Στό βιβλίο τῶν Πράξεων τῶν Ἀποστόλων ἀναφέρεται ὁ θάνατος ἑνός ζεύγους, τοῦ Ἀνανία καί τῆς γυναίκας του Σαπφείρας, οἱ ὁποῖοι πώλησαν κάποιο κτῆμα δικό τους.  Συμφώνησαν ὅμως μεταξύ τους νά κρατήσουν πίσω μέρος τῶν χρημάτων καί νά δώσουν τό ὑπόλοιπο ποσό στούς Ἀποστόλους, λέγοντάς τους ὅτι ἔδωσαν ὅλα ὅσα εἰσέπραξαν. 

                        Τό ψέμα αὐτό προκάλεσε τό διαδοχικό θάνατο καί τῶν δύο, γιατί ἀπό τή μιά εἶπαν ψέματα ἀπέναντι στό Ἅγιο Πνεῦμα καί ἀπό τήν ἄλλη ἤθελαν νά ἐξαπατήσουν τούς ἀνθρώπους, ὅτι δῆθεν εἶναι ἐλεήμονες καί φιλάνθρωποι.  Ἡ Γραφή ὅμως μᾶς λέγει ὅτι: «Μή πλανᾶσθε, Θεός οὔ μυκτηρίζεται·» (Γαλ. στ΄ 7) ὁ Θεός δέν ἐξαπατᾶται, οὔτε ξεγελιέται.

                        Στήν Παλαιά Διαθήκη ἀναφέρεται ἡ ἱστορία τῆς ἁγνῆς Σουσάννας καί τῶν δύο κακῶν πρεσβυτέρων-δικαστῶν, οἱ ὁποῖοι ἐπεδίωξαν νά ἁμαρτήσουν μαζί της.  Ἐκείνη ὅμως εἶχε συνείδηση τοῦ ρόλου καί τῆς ὑπόληψης της ὡς ἀρχόντισσα, ἀλλά εἶχε καί πολύ καλή οἰκογενειακή ἀνατροφή.  Γιά τοῦτο  ἀντιστάθηκε ἔντονα καί αὐτοί γιά νά τήν ἐκδικηθοῦν, τήν κατηγόρησαν ψευδῶς.  Ὁ προφήτης Δανιήλ, ὡς ὁ κριτής, τελικά φανέρωσε τήν ἀπάτη τους καί ἔτσι ὑπέστησαν ἐκεῖνοι ὡς ψεῦτες καί ἀπατεῶνες τό σκληρό θάνατο καί ἡ Σουσάννα ἀθωώθηκε καί ἀποκαταστάθηκε.

                        Ὁ Ἰωσήφ ὁ Πάγκαλος ὅταν ἐπωλήθη ἀπό τούς ἀδελφούς του ἕνεκα φθόνου, εὑρέθη στά χέρια τῆς γυναίκας τοῦ ἀφεντικοῦ του, τοῦ Πετεφρῆ στήν Αἴγυπτο, ἡ ὁποία μπῆκε σέ πειρασμό.  Ἐπειδή ὅμως ὁ Ἰωσήφ ὡς θεοφοβούμενος τήν ἀπέρριψε, ἐκείνη τόν κατηγόρησε ψευδῶς ὅτι τῆς ἐπετέθη καί τήν προσέβαλε.  Ἔτσι ὁ ἀθῶος Ἰωσήφ κατέληξε ἄδικα στή φυλακή.  Ἀπό ἐκεῖ ὅμως ἄρχισε ἡ ἀνάδειξή του ἀπό τό Θεό στό μεγάλο ἀξίωμα τοῦ πρωθυπουργοῦ τῆς Αἰγύπτου μέ τή γνωστή συνέχεια.

                        Ὅταν ὁ Ἡρώδης ὁ Μέγας μέ ψεῦδος πρός τούς σοφούς Μάγους ἐζήτησε νά μάθει γιά τό Θεῖο Βρέφος τῆς Βηθλεέμ, ὁ Θεός ἐπενέβη καί τούς ὑπέδειξε ἄλλο δρόμο ἐπιστροφῆς στόν τόπο τους.

                        Κάποτε ὁ Αἴσωπος, ὡς δοῦλος, κατηγορήθηκε ἄδικα ὅτι ἔφαγε τά σύκα τοῦ ἀφεντικοῦ του.  Τότε πρότεινε, ὁ ἴδιος καί ὁ κατήγορός του νά πιοῦν ἀπό ἕνα ποτήρι ζεστό νερό μέ ἁλάτι.  Τό ἀποτέλεσμα ἦταν νά ἐπακολουθήσει ἐμετός ἀπό μέρους καί τῶν δύο καί ἔτσι ἀποκαλύφθηκε ὁ ἔνοχος, ὁ ὁποῖος ἦταν ὁ κατήγορος.

                        Ὁ σοφός Σολομών ὅταν εὑρέθη μεταξύ τῶν δύο γυναικῶν, τῆς μιᾶς τῆς ὁποίας ἀπέθανε τό παιδί καί τῆς ἄλλης τῆς ὁποίας ζοῦσε, ἀλλά ἡ πρώτη πῆρε τό ζωντανό παιδί καί ψευδῶς ἀξίωνε ὅτι ἦταν τό δικό της, τότε ἐκεῖνος πρότεινε νά τό μοιράσει καί νά πάρουν ἀπό μισό.  Ἡ πραγματική μάνα ὅμως εἶπε ὄχι, ἄς τό πάρει ἡ ἄλλη ὁλόκληρο καί ζωντανό.  Τότε ὁ Σολομών διέκρινε τήν πραγματική μάνα.

                        Μέσα ἀπό τά διάφορα περιστατικά καί παραδείγματα, τά ὁποῖα μνημονεύθησαν, διδασκόμεθα ὅτι τό ψέμα δέν ἀντέχει στό χρόνο, ζημιώνει ὅμως τόν ἄνθρωπο γενικά καί ἰδιαίτερα τόν ἔνοχο.  Ὁ λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ μᾶς συμβουλεύει:  «γνώσεσθε τήν ἀλήθειαν, καί ἡ ἀλήθεια ἐλευθερώσει ὑμᾶς.»  (Ἰωάν. η΄ 32)  Ἀμήν!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

                        The Church, making use of her discretional authenticity, named only a few of her children using the designation “Great”.  Such a person was Basil the Great, the Archbishop of Caesarea of Cappadocia.  It is believed that Basil was born in the city of Neo-Caesarea of Pontos, in the year 330 A.D.  His father, Vassilios, came from Pontos whereas his mother Emmelia came from Cappadocia.  The two genealogic (family) trees derived from aristocratic roots and the same line was followed by their descendants.

                        St Basil came from a large family which comprised of five daughters and four sons.  The eldest sister, Makrina, became a nun as well as her grandmother, Makrina.  Three of the sons became Bishops and one a monk.  Among St Basil’s ancestors there were martyrs of the faith.  He himself lost his father at the age of fifteen and, thus, the care of upbringing and educating all the children remained the sole responsibility of their most devout mother.  St Basil’s father was a teacher and orator and, some believe, that he was also a priest.

                        St Basil studied at the most famous schools of education of his time.  Such schools were in Caesarea, Constantinople and Athens.  There he enjoyed a rich education from esteemed teachers.  At Caesarea he met Gregory of Nazianzos, who became a friend for life and their friendship in Athens became legendary.  Whilst in Athens he also met Julian the Apostate.

                        Basil served the Church as Deacon, Presbyter and as Bishop of Caesarea of Cappadocia for five years, succeeding Eusebius of Caesarea.  His pastoral task was distinguished in philanthropy and the cultivation of education.  His philanthropic task reached its peak in creating the range of buildings known as “Vasileiada”, which included schools for orphans, places of refuge for women, organised meals for the poor and hospitals for the sick.  Additionally, many of his theological writings and epistles have survived.  These are addressed to individuals and clerics and deal with a variety of themes.

                        The text of the Divine Liturgy which is ascribed to St Basil takes place ten times a year.  These are:  1st January, which is the day of his death;  the first five Sundays of Holy and Great Lent;  Holy Thursday;  Holy Saturday;  Christmas Eve and the day before Epiphany.  St Basil’s Divine Liturgy is a profound and extremely theological text.

                        It is worth mentioning that on the day of his funeral the crowd was so dense that a number of people died because of the huge attendance.  St Basil is also commemorated on the 30th January with the other two Hierarchs, St Gregory the Theologian and St John Chrysostom, as protectors of the Greek and Orthodox letters.

                        St Basil worked very hard and systematically in facing the wrong teachings of Aries, which continued even after the First Ecumenical Council and he also worked in facing the heresy of the “Pneumatomachoi”.  St Basil contributed a lot in preparing the Second Ecumenical Council.  Unfortunately, he did not have the opportunity to enjoy this since his death preceded it.  He died at the age of 49.  Christ our Lord, through the intercession of St Basil, have mercy on us and save us.  Amen!

MEALS FOR  THE  ELDERLY:     We are pleased to announce that the meals for the elderly, after the Christmas festivities, will resume on Tuesday, 10th January 2012 with the blessing, cutting and distributing of the traditional Vasilopitta.  As you are aware these meals are given free, twice a week for over thirty years.  These take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1.00 p.m. in Saint Barnabas’ Church hall.  All our elderly are most welcome to come and join the group.

                        So far for the month of January the following have contributed towards the meals:  Koulla Minaides, Onoufrios Onoufriou and Maria Christophi in memory of their beloved uncle Alexandros;  Athenoulla Anastasiou in memory of her beloved husband Kyriacos, parents and brother Michael;  Eugene and Marjorie Nicolaides in memory of their beloved parents Nicolas and Meropi and the Ladies’ Auxiliary Society of PANTANASSA.  Those of you who wish to contribute towards this very worthy cause may come to the Community’s office.

T H E    A N C E S T O R S   O F   J E S U S   C H R I S T

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.”                        (Matthew 1: 1)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

                        The Holy Gospels, attempting to narrate the human origin of Jesus Christ, offer us two genealogical lists.  First, the gospel of St Matthew begins its genealogical list mentioning David the king as a descendant of Abraham and ends it with the name of Jacob the father of Joseph the Betrothed.  Joseph, as it is known, accepted under his protection Mariam from whom “was born Jesus who is called Christ.” (Matthew 1: 16)

                        The other evangelist who presents a genealogical list is St Luke.  Luke the evangelist begins his genealogic list with Joseph the Betrothed and ends it with Adam, the head of the human race.  We may mention that the way of presenting the names in the two lists follows the opposite direction.  Matthew on the one hand ends his list of names with Joseph the Betrothed whereas Luke begins his list of names with Joseph the Betrothed.  Additionally, the reader of the two genealogical lists needs to bear in mind to whom the evangelist is addressing his gospel.  Matthew wrote to Christians of Judaic origin.  Thus, he records Abraham, who the Jews stated that they honoured and respected.  Luke addressed his gospel to the Honourable Theophilos, Governor of Achaia, who became Christian although he had a gentile origin, that is he was previously an idolater.  Luke records Adam in his list to show the universal dimension of the salvific message of Jesus Christ.

                        However, if we read more carefully the list of names as it is presented by Matthew, we will come to the conclusion that its universal character is not missing.  Rahab also belongs to the chain of grandmothers of Jesus Christ.  She was a Canaanite, a prostitute.  One of the Jewish soldiers who entered her land as a spy took her as his wife.  One may say that her origin implies the universal character of the gospel.  Ruth also, after she became a widow, married Boaz who was related to her mother-in-law, Naomi.  She is also a link in the chain of the grandmothers of Jesus Christ.  However, she was not Jewish but a Moabite.  Her case also adds to the universal character of the gospel.

                        As it has become apparent among the personalities which are recorded in the genealogical lists there are cases of holy people and also other personalities with very severe and sinful past.  One such person was David the King who, however, left a notable example of repentance and restoration of his relationship with God.  Additionally, among them is Judas and his daughter-in-law Tamar, from whom he had twins.

                        We need to bear in mind that the people bearing heavy sins are not recorded to scandalise the conscience of the listeners and the readers.  Rather, they are recorded to show how low man had descended and Christ came from heaven of His own will, to lead man to salvation, just and sinners who belong to the genealogical list consist the progenitors of Jesus Christ according to the flesh.

                        Some people may raise the question why we do not have the genealogy of Mariam the mother of Jesus and we have Joseph’s instead.  We need to remember that according to the Jewish custom people were married between them if they belonged to the same tribe.  Joseph and Mariam both belonged to the tribe of Judas.  Thus, by having Joseph’s genealogy, at the same time we have Mariam’s as well.  Next Sunday is Christmas Day.  The metallic sound of the church bells and the wide open doors will invite all faithful, young and old, insignificant and famous, illiterate and wise with the words: “let us hasten to see where Christ was born”, to run to Him like the shepherds of Bethlehem, to worship Him as the wise Magi of the East, to offer Him as gift our sins in order for Him to wash them away and to redeem us and together with the angels sing:  “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill to all men.”  Amen!

MEALS FOR  THE  ELDERLY:     The meals for the elderly during the month of December were subsidized by the following kind donors:  Eleni Antoniou in memory of her beloved departed Evangelos, Prodromos, Elisabeth, Antonios and Eftychia;  the family of Demetrakis and Androulla Nicolaides in memory of their beloved parents Meropi and Nicolas;  Dora Philippou;  the family of Androulla Poirazi-Stavrou in memory of her beloved departed husband Demetrakis and the Greek Women’s Philanthropic Association (Finchley & Barnet), who apart from offering lunch gave Christmas gifts to our elderly.  We thank all the kind donors for their generosity and consideration towards this cause.  When there was no donor the Ladies’ Auxiliary Society of PANTANASSA had the responsibility to offer the meals towards the elderly.  The Committee for the Elderly presented Christmas cards as well as the Archdiocese’s small diary.

CHRISTMAS  HOLIDAYS:   We would like to inform all our honoured elderly that the meals will stop on Thursday, 15th December 2011.  They will resume again on Tuesday, 10th January 2012.

YOUTH  CLUB:  The Youth Club will close for the Christmas holidays on Tuesday, 13th December 2011.

SPIRITUAL  GATHERINGS:  The spiritual gatherings will stop for the Christmas holidays on Tuesday, 13th December 2011.  These will begin again on Tuesday, 10th January 2012.

GREEK  SCHOOL  LESSONS:  The Greek Schools of St Barnabas will stop their lessons today Sunday, 18th December 2011, at the end of the Christmas Concert.

VASILOPITTA  FOR  THE  NEW  YEAR:              At the end of the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, 1st January 2012, the traditional Vasilopitta is blessed, cut and distributed to all the congregation.  We would ask all those of you who will be preparing a Vasilopitta for your family to please prepare an extra one and bring it to the Church for distribution to the faithful.  At the end of the prayers for the Vasilopitta you are invited to the church halls for tea or coffee.  A raffle will be given to all those present and the lucky ones will win a prize.

VASILOPITTA  AT  THE  ARCHDIOCESE:  On New Year’s Eve, Saturday evening, 31st December 2011, Vespers will be sung at the chapel of the Annunciation in our Archdiocese.  This will begin at 6.00 p.m. At the end of the service, as it is customary, His Eminence Gregorios, the Archbishop of Thyateira and Great Britain, will bless, cut and distribute the Vasilopitta to all those present.  The Chancellor of the Archdiocese, His Grace Athanasios, Bishop of Tropaeou, will deliver the customary speech referring to the work of the Archdiocese for the year 2011.

PANTANASSA’S  FUNCTION: On Thursday, 19th January 2012, the Ladies’ Auxiliary Society of PANTANASSA are organising a social evening where a hot meal will be served.  Price for each ticket is £20.00.  All are welcome at 7.30 p.m.

HOLY  MYRRH:       This coming Holy Week the service of blessing the Holy Myrrh will take place at the Patriarchal Church of Saint George in Constantinople.  You may be aware that the Holy Myrrh used for baptisms throughout Orthodoxy is distributed by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.  The preparation is very costly.  We are all therefore invited to contribute generously towards this need.

“And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshipped Him.  And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him:  gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”  (Matthew 2: 11)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Newly-Born Lord,

                        With sublime and melodic hymns, with our church buildings full of light and adorned with the myrrh of our love, with our souls full of sacred awe and hearing the chanting with which our church addresses us, singing:  “O come faithful let us see where Christ is born”, we hasten to transfer ourselves mentally to Bethlehem, where we will meet the Divine Infant, swaddled and laying in the manger of animals.

                        The anniversary of the Feast of the Nativity of Christ the Saviour asks us as much as it is possible, to become alien from the noise of the world.  Being lifted from the earthly matters to the heavenly, let us try to experience within ourselves the extra-ordinary and awesome mystery which takes place for our salvation.

                        The Son and Logos of God, of His own will, came to earth and taking flesh from the pure blood of the Virgin Mary, and with the co-operation of the Holy Spirit, became a man like us in every way but without sin, since He “committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth.” (1 Peter 2: 22).

                        Since God became man as well, He entered time and divided it into time Before Christ and time After Christ.  God became man in order to approach man and invite us to repentance and turn into the Paternal arms from where we fell, because of our egoism and disobedience towards the Divine Will.  He invited us to be at peace with ourselves, with our fellowmen, with the whole of creation and with our Creator.  We will then be ready to return close to God, our Creator, where peace and tranquility reign.

On the night of the Divine Birth the bright star appeared in heav en and led the steps of the Magi of the Far East to Jerusalem, where they sought the  Divine Infant, the Newly-Born King.  The arrival of the Three Wise Magi and the piece of information they brought with them greatly disturbed Herod, as well as the whole city of Jerusalem.  Since Herod suspected that there was supposedly an opponent, he called the archpriests and scribes of the Jews in order to learn where the expected Messiah would be born.  When he learnt that He would be born in Bethlehem, he then took the time and found the Magi.  He cunningly invited them to his palace in order to try and ascertain the exact time of the Birth of the Messiah and where He was to be found, in order to visit the Child, pretending that he wanted to pay his respects, as he claimed.

                        Naturally, some time elapsed by the time the Magi arrived in Bethlehem.  The many visitors and callers who came to enroll, departed and therefore, there was more space in the places where the visitors could stay.  For this reason the Divine Family moved from the shabby cave to a house.  It is there that the Magi met our Lady and the Divine Child.

                        The Magi coming face to face with the Divine Child, offered homage and worshipped the Newly-Born King.  They expressed their joy, their respect and the warm feelings which ruled in their being, by placing at the feet of the Infant Christ, gold, frankincense and myrrh.  With the gold they acknowledged the office of the Lord as King.  With the frankincense they referred to His Person as God and with the myrrh they foretold His death on the cross.

                        Let us then whole-heartedly glorify the Triune God since He has enabled us to pay our respects to the Divine Nativity.  With a swift step we accompany the shepherds to the cave of the Nativity.  With the Wise Magi we worship the Nativity spiritually and with the Holy Angels we sing endlessly:  “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.”  (Luke 2: 14).  May the Newly-Born Divine Child bless your families, your works and safeguard the life of everyone.  Amen!

CALENDARS:  We are pleased to announce that the Archdiocese’s calendars have arrived.  You may purchase your copy from either the offices or our two churches.  Prices are as follows:

                    Large calendar:  £6.00 each;  Small calendar: £1.50 each.

NEW  YEAR’S  EVE  VESPERS:  We would like to inform you that Vespers at the Archdiocese will be held at 6.00 p.m. on Saturday, 31st December 2011.  His Grace, Athanasios, Bishop of Tropaeou, will deliver an account of the Archdiocese’s activities during the year 2011.  You are all invited to attend this service which is celebrated only once a year.

VASILOPITTA:  We kindly ask all the families who are preparing a vasilopitta for their homes to kindly prepare an extra one and bring it to the church for the  Sunday service , 1st January, 2012.  This will be blessed, cut and distributed to all the faithful at the end of the Divine Liturgy.

BLESSING  OF  WATERS: On Thursday, 5th and Friday 6th January 2012, the Blessing of Waters will take place at the end of the Divine Liturgy.  The Divine Liturgy on the 5th January 2012, will be held at St Mary’s Cathedral.  The service on the 6th January 2012, will be held in both our churches, times as follows:

                                    St Barnabas Church:   8.00 – 11.00 am.

                                    St Mary’s Cathedral:   9.00 – 12.30 p.m.

PARENTS  AND  CHILDREN’S  GROUP:  For some time now parents and small children meet at St Barnabas church hall after the church service, for coffee and a chat.  This activity also gives the children the opportunity to play and socialise together.  All parents with small children are invited to come.  Time:  approximately 11.00 a.m.

PANTANASSA’S  FUNCTION:  On Thursday, 19th January 2012, the Auxiliary Society of PANTANASSA is organising a social evening for a philanthropic cause.  The purpose is to raise funds and assist our compatriot, Yiannis Georgiou, and his family.  You may already know from the appeal which appeared in the Greek local papers that the family concerned is in a critical, financial state since the father is unable to work because of his illness and the size of the family (they have six children) makes it difficult to meet their needs.  We will appreciate it very much if we have your generous contribution towards this philanthropic initiative.  Tickets:  £20.00 each.  Time:  7.30 p.m. at St Mary’s hall.

            Ἡ Ἐκκλησία, ἀγαπητοί ἀδελφοί, κάνοντας χρήση τῆς διακριτικῆς αὐθεντίας της ἀπέδωσε σέ πολύ λίγα ἀπό τά παιδιά της τήν προσωνυμία Μέγας.  Ἕνα τέτοιο πρόσωπο ὑπῆρξε ὁ Ἅγιος Βασίλειος, ὁ Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Καισαρείας τῆς Καππαδοκίας.  Ὁ Βασίλειος γεννήθηκε κατά πᾶσα πιθανότητα στή Νεοκαισάρεια τοῦ Πόντου, τό ἔτος 330 μ.Χ.  Ὁ πατέρας του, Βασίλειος, καταγόταν ἀπό τόν Πόντο καί ἡ μητέρα του Ἐμμελία ἀπό τήν Καππαδοκία.  Τά δύο γενεαλογικά δέντρα εἶχαν ἀριστοκρατική καταγωγή καί τόν ἴδιο δρόμο ἀκολούθησαν καί οἱ  ἀπόγονοί τους. 

            Ἡ οἰκογένεια τοῦ Βασιλείου ἦταν πολύτεκνη, ἀφοῦ εἶχε πέντε θυγατέρες καί τέσσερις υἱούς.  Ἡ μεγαλύτερη ἀδελφή, ἡ Μακρίνα, ἐγένετο μοναχή μέ τή φερώνυμη γιαγιά της.  Τρεῖς ἀπό τούς υἱούς ἐγένοντο Ἐπίσκοποι καί ἕνας μοναχός.  Μεταξύ τῶν προγόνων του ὑπῆρχαν μάρτυρες τῆς πίστεως.  Αὐτός σέ ἡλικία δεκαπέντε ἐτῶν ὀρφάνεψε ἀπό πατέρα καί ἔτσι ἡ φροντίδα τῆς ἀνατροφῆς καί μορφώσεως ὅλων τῶν παιδιῶν παρέμεινε στήν εὐθύνη τῆς εὐσεβεστάτης μητρός των.  Ὁ πατέρας τοῦ Βασιλείου ὑπῆρξε διδάσκαλος καί ρήτορας, κάποιοι δέ πιστεύουν ὅτι ἦταν καί ἱερέας. 

            Ὁ Βασίλειος σπούδασε στά καλύτερα κέντρα τῶν γραμμάτων τῆς ἐποχῆς του.  Τέτοια ἦταν ἡ Καισάρεια, ἡ Κωνσταντινούπολη καί ἡ Ἀθήνα.  Ἐκεῖ ἔτυχε λιπαρᾶς παιδείας ἀπό διακεκριμένους δασκάλους.  Στήν Καισάρεια γνώρισε τόν κατόπιν διά βίου φίλο του Γρηγόριο τόν Ναζιανζηνό, τοῦ ὁποίου ἡ φιλία συνεχίσθηκε στήν Ἀθήνα καί ὑπῆρξε  παροιμιώδης.  Ἐκεῖ γνώρισε ἐπίσης τόν Ἰουλιανό τόν Παραβάτη. 

            Ὁ Βασίλειος διηκόνησε τήν Ἐκκλησία ἀπό τή θέση τοῦ διακόνου, τοῦ ἱερέως καί γιά μιά πενταετία ὡς Ἐπίσκοπος Καισαρείας τῆς Καππαδοκίας, διαδεχθείς τόν Εὐσέβιο Καισαρείας.  Ἡ ποιμαντική του ἐργασία διεκρίθη στή φιλανθρωπία καί στήν καλλιέργεια τῶν γραμμάτων.  Τό φιλανθρωπικό του ἔργο μεσουράνησε μέ τή δημιουργία τοῦ συγκροτήματος τῆς γνωστῆς ὡς Βασιλειάδας, ἡ ὁποία ἐκάλυπτε σχολές ὀρφανῶν, οἴκους προστασίας τῶν γυναικῶν, συσσίτια διατροφῆς τῶν πτωχῶν καί νοσοκομεῖα νοσηλείας τῶν ἀσθενῶν.  Ἐπιπρόσθετα σώζεται πλῆθος κειμένων θεολογικῶν καί ἐπιστολῶν, οἱ ὁποῖες ἀπευθύνονται σέ ἰδιῶτες καί κληρικούς καί καλύπτουν πλῆθος θεμάτων. 

Ἡ θεία Λειτουργία, ἡ ὁποία ἀποδίδεται στό Μέγα Βασίλειο, τελεῖται δέκα φορές τό χρόνο.  Αὐτές εἶναι τήν πρώτη Ἰανουαρίου, ἡμέρα τοῦ θανάτου τοῦ Ἁγίου, τίς πέντε πρῶτες Κυριακές τῆς Ἁγίας καί Μ. Τεσσαρακοστῆς, τήν Ἁγία Πέμπτη, τό Ἅγιο Σάββατο, τήν παραμονή τῶν Χριστουγέννων καί τῶν Φώτων.  Πρόκειται γιά ἕνα βαθυστόχαστο καί θεολογικώτατο κείμενο.

            Νά παρατηρήσουμε δέ, ὅτι τήν ἡμέρα τῆς ταφῆς τοῦ Ἁγίου ἡ κοσμοσυρροή ὑπῆρξε τόση, ὥστε ἀπέθαναν ἄνθρωποι κάτω ἀπό τήν πίεση τοῦ πλήθους.  Ὁ Βασίλειος συνεορτάζεται στίς 30 Ἰανουαρίου, μαζί μέ τούς Ἱεράρχας Γρηγόριο τό Θεολόγο καί Ἰωάννη τό Χρυσόστομο, ὡς προστάτες τῶν Ἑλληνικῶν καί Χριστιανικῶν γραμμάτων.

            Ὁ Βασίλειος ἐργάσθηκε σκληρά καί συστηματικά γιά τήν ἀντιμετώπιση τῶν κακοδοξιῶν τοῦ Ἀρείου, οἱ ὁποῖες συνεχίσθησαν μετά τήν Πρώτη Οἰκουμενική Σύνοδο καί ἐπίσης μέ τήν ἀντιμετώπιση τῆς αἱρέσεως τῶν Πνευματομάχων.  Αὐτός συνέβαλε πολύ στήν προετοιμασία τῆς Β΄ Οἰκουμενικῆς Συνόδου, τήν ὁποία ὅμως δέν ἀξιώθηκε νά χαρεῖ, γιατί τόν πρόλαβε ὁ θάνατος σέ ἡλικία μόλις 49 ἐτῶν.  Ταῖς αὐτοῦ πρεσβείαις Χριστέ ὁ Θεός ἐλέησον καί σῶσον ἡμᾶς. Ἀμήν!

                        Ἡ Ἀμαλία, θυγατέρα τῶν John Lamarca καί Χριστίνας, τό γένος Βασιλειάδου, μέ ἀνάδοχο τή Γεωργία Birri.

                        Ὁ Θεοφιλέστατος Ἐπίσκοπος Τροπαίου κ. Ἀθανάσιος τέλεσε τό μυστήριο τῆς βαπτίσεως τῆς Ἀμαλίας.  Συγχαίρουμε γονεῖς καί ἀναδόχους καί εὐχόμεθα στούς νεοφώτιστους νά ζήσουν.
